Program Overview

Working with Children:

The Working with Children Volunteer Program offers participants the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children invarious settings. Volunteers will be involved in diverse activities aimed at providing education, support, and companionship to children in need. This program allows volunteers to work in children's homes or with children facing special challenges, such as those with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Throughout the program, volunteers will engage in a range of activities designed to meet the specific needs of the children. This may include assisting with educational programs, organizing recreational activities, providing mentorship and emotional support, and helping with daily tasks. Volunteers will play a vital role in creating a safe and nurturing environment for the children, promoting their overall well-being and personal development.

Caring for Domesticated Elephants:

The Caring for Domesticated Elephants Volunteer Program offers a unique opportunity for participants to contribute to the welfare and conservation of elephants in a hands-on manner. This program focuses on domesticated elephants, providing volunteers with a chance to learn about their behaviour, needs, and the challenges they face in their captive environments.

Volunteers will actively participate in the daily care of the elephants, gaining practical experience in tasks such as feeding, bathing, and observing their behaviour. Through these activities, participants will develop a deeper understanding of elephant conservation efforts and the importance of habitat preservation.

The program also offers educational opportunities, including learning about the cultural significance of elephants in Sri Lanka and the conservation initiatives in place to protect these magnificent creatures. Volunteers will work closely with local staff and experts, who will provide guidance and insight into the care and well-being of elephants.

Program Activities:

Working with Children:
  • Teaching English: Volunteers will assist in English language lessons, helping children improve their language skills, and fostering a love for learning. This may involve organising interactive lessons, conducting educational activities, and providing one-on-one support.
  • Recreational Activities: Volunteers will organise and participate in recreational activities such as games, sports, arts and crafts, and outdoor adventures. These activities aim to promote creativity, teamwork, and overall well-being among the children.
  • Aesthetic Activities: Volunteers will engage children in creative projects, such as painting, drawing, or music, allowing them to express themselves artistically and explore their talents.
  • Support at Children's Homes: Volunteers will provide assistance to the staff at children's homes, participating in daily routines, offering emotional support, and organising educational and recreational activities for the children.
  • Working with Children with Special Needs: Volunteers will work closely with children who have special needs, providing personalised attention, and implementing activities tailored to their abilities and interests.
  • You will be working in rural government schools, Children's homes, and Special schools in Sri Lanka.
Care for Elephants:
  • Feeding: Volunteers will prepare and provide food to elephants, following appropriate guidelines and ensuring their nutritional needs are met.
  • Bathing: Volunteers will assist in bathing elephants, helping to keep them clean and maintaining their overall hygiene.
  • Maintenance: Volunteers will participate in cleaning and maintaining the elephant enclosures, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for the elephants.
  • Observation: Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about elephant behavior and conservation efforts by observing and documenting their activities. This knowledge will contribute to ongoing research and conservation initiatives.
  • Enrichment: Volunteers will assist in providing enriching activities for elephants, such as creating toys or arranging play areas, which stimulate their physical and mental well-being.

Program Duration:

Working with Children:

The program duration for working with children ranges from 2 to 10 weeks, allowing volunteers to immerse themselves in the local community and establish meaningful connections with the children.

Care for Elephants:

The program duration for caring for elephants is 1 to 2 weeks, providing volunteers with a hands-on experience in elephant conservation while gaining valuable insights into their behaviour and needs.

Application requirements:

  • This program is open to both male and female volunteers..
  • All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Children accompanied by their parents are also eligible.
  • Volunteers should possess a genuine passion for working with children and the well-being and conservation of elephants.
  • Volunteers must be physically fit and capable of engaging in activities that may involve manual labor and working in outdoor environments.
  • Volunteers should show respect for local customs, traditions, and cultural significance in Sri Lanka.
  • Volunteers must have a valid passport.
  • Volunteers must obtain a visa to enter Sri Lanka.
  • Volunteers must have valid travel insurance.
  • Police Background Check: All volunteers are required to provide a police background check when applying for the program to ensure the safety and protection of the local community.

Accommodation:

Volunteers will be provided with safe and comfortable shared accommodations, located at the elephant care project or within close proximity. Basic amenities such as beds, fans, and bathroom facilities will be provided to ensure volunteers have a comfortable stay during their time in the program. The accommodation will offer a chance for volunteers to connect with like-minded individuals and share experiences, fostering a sense of camaraderie and cultural exchange.

Meals:

Volunteers will be provided with three nutritious meals per day, including vegetarian options. The meals will be prepared using locally sourced ingredients, giving volunteers an opportunity to savour traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. Dietary restrictions or preferences can be accommodated if communicated in advance.

Volunteers are responsible for their airfare, travel insurance, visa fees, and any other expense of personal nature including local transport, sightseeing, etc.
